Laurie Curtis is currently the Early Literacy/ Dyslexia Program Manager at the Kansas State Department of Education since December 2021. Laurie also serves as an International Literacy Consultant/Volunteer at Ethiopia Reads, where Laurie is the Chair of Book Centered Learning. Laurie previously worked as an Assistant Professor and Director of the Reading Specialist Program at Kansas State University from August 2003 to May 2017. Prior to that, Laurie was an Elementary Classroom Teacher at USD 378 from August 1988 to June 2003. Laurie holds a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from Kansas State University, a Master's degree in Elementary Education and Teaching/Literacy from SUNY Oneonta, and a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and Teaching from the University of Northern Colorado.

The Department promotes the mission of the Kansas State Board of Education through leadership and support for student learning in Kansas. The Board is charged with the general supervision of public education and other educational interests in the state. While clearly acknowledging the role and importance of local control, the Board has the responsibility to provide direction and leadership for the supervision of all state educational institutions under its jurisdiction.
