Gretchen Nelson has a diverse work experience. Gretchen started their career in 1995 as an Institutional Research Assistant at the University of Alaska. Later, in 2003, they worked as a Teacher Intern at the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District. Gretchen then became a Fourth Grade Teacher there in 2004 and also worked as a Classroom Teacher from 2006 to 2023, focusing on physical education and exploration. Additionally, they held the role of Spelling Bee Coordinator from 2008 to 2023. In 2006, they worked as an After School Program Facilitator at the Armed Services YMCA Fort Wainwright. In 2015, they served as a member of the Principal Hiring Committee at Fairbanks North Star Borough School District at Arctic Light Elementary School. Currently, they are a Principal Intern at the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District.

Gretchen Nelson's education history begins with their high school education at Monroe Catholic High School, where they obtained their high school diploma. Gretchen then went on to attend the University of Alaska Fairbanks from 1993 to 2004, where they earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education and Teaching. In 2023, Gretchen enrolled at Grand Canyon University and completed a program in Educational Leadership and Administration, General in 2024. In addition to their formal education, Gretchen has obtained certifications in Elementary Education, Kagan Structures Level I, SIOP, and is a Thinking Maps Instructor.
