Jeff Nicholls

Director, Hardware Engineering at Kepler Communication

Jeff Nicholls has a diverse range of work experience in the field of engineering, specializing in hardware engineering, antenna design, and wireless communications. Jeff is currently working as the Director of Hardware Engineering at Kepler Communications Inc. since January 2023. Prior to this, they held the role of Manager of Payload Engineering at Kepler Communications Inc. in 2022. From July 2020 to December 2021, they worked as the Manager of RF and Antenna Design at the same company. Jeff also worked as the Lead Antenna Designer at Kepler Communications Inc. from April 2018 to July 2020.

Before joining Kepler Communications Inc., Jeff worked at SpaceX as an Antenna Engineer II from August 2016 to March 2018. Jeff also gained research experience at the University of Toronto in the Department of Electrical Engineering, where they completed their M.A.Sc. thesis on integrated feeds for electronically reconfigurable apertures from September 2013 to January 2016. Additionally, they worked as an Antenna Engineer at the University of Toronto/Department of Electrical Engineering/UTIAS SFL in 2015 and as an undergraduate researcher in RF Ion Thruster Simulation at the University of Toronto/Division of Engineering Science in 2013.

Jeff's earlier experience includes roles such as an Antenna and RF Engineer at the University of Toronto Aerospace Team in 2015, the Wireless Communications Lead at Robotics for Space Exploration (RSX) from August 2014 to June 2015, an undergraduate researcher in computer networks-on-chip at the University of Toronto/Department of Electrical Engineering in 2011, and an undergraduate researcher in the commissioning of a 5 MeV Electron Accelerator at Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) in 2012. Jeff also completed their B.A.Sc. thesis on the design of a 1.3 GHz Superconducting Radio-Frequency Sample Test Cavity at the University of Toronto/Division of Engineering Science from September 2012 to April 2013.

Jeff Nicholls has a solid education background. Jeff obtained their Master of Applied Science (M.A.Sc.) degree in RF/Microwave Antenna Engineering/Electromagnetics from the University of Toronto. Jeff attended the university from 2013 to 2015 for this program. Before that, from 2009 to 2013, they pursued a Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.Sc.) in Engineering Science - Engineering Physics, also at the University of Toronto.

In addition to their formal education, Jeff has earned two additional certifications. In July 2015, they obtained the Canadian Amateur Radio Certification (Advanced) from Industry Canada / Industrie Canada. Furthermore, in March 2006, they achieved the Level 1 Ski Instructor certification from the Canadian Ski Instructors' Alliance.
