Edward J Benz is President and CEO Emeritus of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and the Richard and Susan Smith Distinguished Professor of Medicine, Professor of Pediatrics, and Professor of Genetics at Harvard Medical School. He served previously as the Sir William Osler Professor of Medicine. Director of the Department of Medicine and Physician in Chief at Johns Hopkins, Jack d. Meyers Chair of Medicine and Chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, and Professor of Medicine and Genetics and Chief of Hematology at the Yale University Department of Medicine. A molecular geneticist and hematologist, he has made seminal contributions to the understanding red cell development and inherited anemias. He has been elected to Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi, Alpha Omega Alpha, the American Society of Clinical Investigation (Past President), the American Association of Physicians, the National Academy of Medicine, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Fellowship of the American College of Physicians, and Fellowship of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is also past president of the American Society of Hematology, the Association of American Cancer Institutes, the American Clinical and Climatological Association, and the Friends of the National Institute of Nursing. He is Executive Director of the Cure Sickle Cell Initiative of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. He received his Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, from Princeton University, his MD magna cum laude from Harvard Medical School, his residency at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, and his fellowship in Hematology at Yale University. Dr. Benz is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Hematology.
