Terry Byrne has a diverse work experience in the field of journalism. They began their career as a copy editor and photographer at The Daily Press in 1983. They then worked as a copy/layout/graphics editor at The Virginian-Pilot from 1984 to 1986. In 1985, they moved to The Detroit News as a copy editor, features slot, and photo editor. From 1987 to 2006, Terry worked at USA TODAY and USA WEEKEND Magazine, taking on various roles such as multiplatform editor, copy chief, reporter, columnist, celebrity handler, and swing editor. Since 2017, they have been working at Kaiser Health News as a copy chief and style maven.

Terry Byrne attended Michigan State University from 1978 to 1983, where they earned a Bachelor's degree from the Honors College. Their field of study was Journalism, and they also majored, at times, in Biology, Telecommunications, and Music - Piano performance. In 1997, Terry attended the Poynter Institute as a Fellow, focusing on Creative Writing. They then enrolled at Northern Virginia Community College from 2003 to 2004, studying Sound Engineering. Additionally, Terry attended Tidewater Community College from 1983 to 1984, where they studied Geology/Earth Science, General, and Creative Writing. It is also known that Terry holds a certification as a Certified Quark Publishing System administrator.
