Jim Fernandes has a diverse work experience spanning over three decades. Jim started their career in the British Army, where they held several positions of increasing responsibility, including Commanding Officer and Staff Officer. Jim then moved on to work for NATO as a Senior Staff Officer before joining Kier Group, a construction company. At Kier Group, Jim Fernandes held various roles, including Defence Key Account Manager and Defence Sector Lead, where they were responsible for developing the company's business strategy and delivering targeted bidding activity. In their most recent role at Kier Group, they served as the Director of Business Development, overseeing the strategic projects sector and supporting the delivery of the company's business plan.

Jim Fernandes has a diverse education history. In 1977-1987, they attended Brentwood School. In 2003-2004, they completed the Advanced Command and Staff Course in Advanced Military and Operational Studies at the Joint Services Command and Staff College. In 2014, they attended the Alliance Manchester Business School for an Advanced Management Achievement Course, emphasizing Business for senior leaders. Jim Fernandes also holds additional certifications, including being a Fellow (Member since Dec 2002), Chartered Engineer from The Institution of Civil Engineers, obtained in 2013, and being a Managing Successful Programmes (MSP) Registered Practitioner from APMG International, acquired in June 2013.
