Mckenzie Hessel has a diverse work experience. Mckenzie began their career in 2011 as a Reunion Work Coordinator and STRIDE Scholar at Smith College. In 2013, they were a Student Athletic Trainer at Smith College. In 2014, they were a Research and Conservation Intern at Iracambi Research Center. From 2015 to 2016, they were a Bilingual Naturalist at Santa Cruz County Outdoor Science School. From 2017 to 2019, they were an Educational Assistant III at Portland Public Schools and a Software Engineer Apprentice and Software Engineer at Vacasa. Since 2020, they have been a Backend Software Engineer and Senior Backend Software Engineer at Kinsa.

Mckenzie Hessel completed their secondary education at Woodrow Wilson High School from 2007 to 2011. Mckenzie then attended Smith College from 2011 to 2015, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude in Environmental Science & Policy and Spanish. During this time, they also obtained an English/Spanish Bilingual Certification from the State of California in September 2015. Subsequently, Hessel pursued further studies at Universidad de Chile in Public Policy and Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in Sustainable Development, both of which they are still enrolled in. In 2018, they completed a Full Stack JavaScript Techdegree from Treehouse.
