Willem Kamphuis is an experienced researcher with a comprehensive background in neuroscience and animal experimentation. Currently serving as Secretary of the Ethical Committee for Animal Experimentation at KNAW since 2015, Willem oversees the ethical evaluation integral to project authorization for scientific studies utilizing experimental animals. Previous roles include Senior Scientist positions at the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience and the Netherlands Ophthalmic Research Institute, where research focused on neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and glaucoma, as well as molecular aspects of synaptic transmission. Early career experience at the University of Amsterdam involved research on gene expression alterations in epilepsy and the characterization of neurotransmitter dynamics in kindling models. Educational qualifications include a PhD project on GABAergic processes in epilepsy.

De Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen is forum, geweten en stem van de Nederlandse wetenschap.
