After graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Knox, Bayer went on to earn both his master's degree and a doctorate in nuclear physics at Michigan State University. Bayer spent his Microsoft career in software development and security. Bayer is currently president of the Douglas and Maria Bayer Foundation, a non-profit supporting the arts, education, and the environment. He and his wife created the Bayer Faculty Chair in Earth Sciences in Knox's Environmental Studies Department.
