Jim Bretl has worked in the engineering field since 1993. Jim started their career at Dynetics Engineering Corporation and Needs-Mett, Incorporated as a Project Engineer and eventually became an Engineering Manager. In 2004, they joined the Marine Hydrodynamics Lab at the University of Michigan as a Research Assistant, where they were responsible for model building, model testing, and dynamometer development. In 2009, they began working at Ocean Power Technologies as a Senior Hydrodynamicist, focusing on modeling performance metrics of wave energy converters. Finally, in 2016, they joined Korvis Automation as a Manufacturing Project Engineer.

Jim Bretl completed a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan Technological University from 1987 to 1990. Jim then went on to the University of Michigan to pursue a MsE and PhD in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, which they completed in 2010. Jim also holds a Professional Engineer (PE) certification.
