Derek Howe, P.E. has extensive experience in the engineering field. Derek began their career in 1991 as a Special Projects Department Head and P-3 Orion Mission Commander in the US Navy. In 2005, they took on the role of Maintenance Superintendent at WLSSD, where they planned, directed and reviewed the work of a variety of skilled maintenance personnel and helpers. In 2008, they became Distribution Systems Engineer at Minnesota Power, providing engineering expertise for both internal and external customers. In 2010, they joined Lake Country Power as Chief Operating Officer and Director of Engineering, where they managed and directed operating and capital budgets in excess of 15 million dollars, system planning, work plan development, capital projects, operation and maintenance of the distribution system, consulting firms and contractors. Derek also developed and revised three year construction work plans, sectionalizing studies, arc flash studies, transformer and feeder loading and balancing reports, oil filled equipment analysis and assessment reports, capital project construction contracts, power quality reports, and numerous operational and safety policies and procedures.
Derek Howe, P.E. has a long and varied educational history. Derek began their studies in 1992 at the Naval Nuclear Power School-Prototype, where they earned an Electric Plant Control Operator degree. Derek then attended the University of Idaho from 1993 to 1996, graduating with a BSEE in Electrical Engineering. In 1998, they attended Naval Flight School and earned a Naval Flight Officer degree. From 2016 to 2018, they attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute, graduating with an MSEE in Power Systems. Most recently, they have been attending University of the Cumberlands, where they are expected to graduate in 2023 with a Doctor of Philosophy in Organizational Leadership.
