Ben Miller is an experienced operations and automation professional with extensive expertise in scaling data generation systems and optimizing laboratory operations. Currently serving as Head of Operations at Leash Bio since November 2023, Ben previously held the role of VP Automation at insitro, where responsibilities included scaling data generation systems. Prior roles at Recursion included Senior Director of Automation Engineering, where Ben oversaw data generation in high throughput phenotypic screening laboratories. A significant portion of Ben's career was spent at Myriad Genetics, advancing through various positions focusing on optimizing genetic testing laboratories and implementing automation systems. Ben's earlier experience includes positions at Guyot Designs, Velocity11, and GlycoFi, complemented by a Master's degree in Genetic Engineering from Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College and a Bachelor's degree in Engineering from Dartmouth College.

Every single machine learning (ML)-driven breakthrough, from language translation to Go championships, was immediately preceded not by an algorithmic innovation but by a massive, well-controlled, purpose-built dataset. An ML-driven breakthrough in medicinal chemistry is going to require a similar dataset, but such high-quality, well-structured experimental data doesn’t exist yet. We're building that data set by making physical measurements of lots of targets (with automated in-house protein production) screened against lots of compounds (with DNA-encoded chemical libraries). We're also building the ML models, that will eventually be generalizable across any protein and novel medicines using insights from our models.
