Hildegard Westphal has extensive work experience in the field of geology and marine research. Hildegard started their career in 2010 as a Professor for Geology and Workgroup Leader for Carbonate Sedimentology at Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) GmbH, where they currently hold the role. In 2010, they also took on the position of Wissenschaftliche Direktorin at Leibniz-Zentrum für Marine Tropenforschung. Hildegard'stenure as Wissenschaftliche Direktorin ended in June 2020. Additionally, Hildegard Westphal is currently serving as a Visiting Faculty at KAUST (King Abdullah University of Science and Technology), a role they started in October 2021 and is expected to hold until September 2023.
Hildegard Westphal obtained a Diplom in Geologie from Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen in 1994. Hildegard then pursued a Doctoral Degree in Geology from Kiel University, which they completed in 1998. Later, they achieved a Habilitation in Geology from the University of Tübingen in 2004. Alongside their academic pursuits, they also engaged in an exchange program at The University of Queensland from 1991 to 1992, focusing on the fields of Geology and Geophysics.
