Vukosi Marivate

Vukosi Marivate serves as the UP ABSA Chair of Data Science at the University of Pretoria, holding positions as Associate Professor and Senior Lecturer, and leads the Data Science for Social Impact Research Group. Marivate is a co-founder of Lelapa AI, Masakhane, and Deep Learning Indaba, focusing on leveraging artificial intelligence to address African challenges and enhancing representation of African languages in technology. Additional roles include membership on the Management Board of the Partnership on AI, steering committee membership of Lacuna Fund, and board membership with the Council for Higher Education. Marivate's prior experience includes leadership roles at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and advisory participation at the Sydney Brenner Institute for Molecular Bioscience. Educational qualifications comprise a PhD in Computer Science from Rutgers University and an MSc in Electrical Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand, among other leadership and business training credentials.
