Steve Shapiro

Steven Shapiro joined Lesley University in August 2016. Dr. Shapiro comes to Lesley from Guilford College where, over a 21 year span, he served in many capacities including Professor of Physics, Associate Academic Dean, Director of Academic Advising, and Chair of the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. In collaboration with colleagues from across the Guilford campus, he proposed and implemented a Student Success Program that received the 2011 Outstanding Collaborative Initiative Award from the American College Personnel Association. In addition, he instituted a yearly evaluation of faculty advisors (approved by the faculty) and a yearly monetary award to recognize academic advisors who have demonstrated sustained excellence and extraordinary commitment to student support and guidance. In 2015, he received an Outstanding Advising Administrator Award from NACADA, the Global Community for Academic Advising. Dr. Shapiro has taught all levels of undergraduate physics (including courses designed for scientists and non-scientists alike). With his students, he designed and taught in-school science activities and after-school science programs for elementary and middle school students. For several years, in collaboration with a colleague in Education Studies and the Guilford County Schools, he organized and hosted, at Guilford College, the annual county-wide science fair. Dr. Shapiro has received grants from Analog Devices, the Research Corporation, the National Science Foundation, and Syngenta. He has published papers on mantle convection and on results from a test of General Relativity. Dr. Shapiro earned a B.A. in physics from Colby College and a Ph.D. in Geophysics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
