Dr. Jonnie Penn

Dr. Jonnie Penn is an Associate Teaching Professor at the University of Cambridge, where the course developed won the 2022 Outstanding Achievements and Research Contributions award for Best Course in AI. As a Postdoctoral Researcher, Dr. Penn led the Mellon Foundation Sawyer Seminar focused on the histories of artificial intelligence. Additional roles include Research Fellow at St Edmund's College, Cambridge, Affiliate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University, Project Development Lead at the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence, and Fellow at The RSA. Dr. Penn also co-founded The Buried Life, a grassroots movement that has garnered international attention, with endorsements from notable figures. Other contributions include serving as Schedule Chair for the AI for Social Good Workshop Series and being a Council Member for the Council on Extended Intelligence, with educational credentials comprising a PhD and MPhil from the University of Cambridge and a BA from McGill University.

Our mission at the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence (CFI) is to work across research disciplines and sectors to ensure AI is a force for good. Based at the University of Cambridge, we also have spokes at Imperial College London, and at the University of California, Berkeley. CFI advances research on the nature, ethics and impact of AI and explores the opportunities and challenges of this potentially epoch-making technology, in the short-term as well as the long-term.
