Melissa Barney, MS, SHRM-CP

Melissa Barney, MS, SHRM-CP has extensive experience in Human Resources. Melissa began their career in 2004 at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine as an HR Generalist. In this role, they provided HR support and consultation to faculty, postdoctoral fellows, staff (clinical, research and administrative), and students. Melissa coached and advised managers on employee relations cases involving progressive counseling, corrective action, and policy interpretation, and collaborated with leadership on strategic planning and implementation of HR initiatives throughout the divisions.

In 2010, Melissa transitioned to UPMC as a Human Resources Consultant. In this role, they served as the primary employment consultant for designated departments and advised and instructed all levels of management on employment policies, procedures and legal concerns. Melissa also participated in ongoing review of the effectiveness of human resource policies.

In 2011, Melissa returned to the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine as an HR Generalist. In this role, they provided HR support and consultation to multiple divisions containing faculty, postdoctoral fellows, advanced practice providers, staff (clinical, research and administrative), and students. Melissa coached and advised managers on employee relations cases involving progressive counseling, corrective action, and policy interpretation, and collaborated with divisional leadership on strategic planning and implementation of HR initiatives throughout the divisions.

Most recently, Melissa has been working as the HR Manager at the Lieber Institute for Brain Development since 2018. In this role, they provide strategic and hands-on support for the HR function in the areas of recruiting, onboarding, employee relations, compliance, immigration, benefits, compensation, and training in a fast-paced, evolving research environment. Her responsibilities include managing the recruiting process for the Institute by partnering with hiring managers and central administration to identify personnel needs. This includes creation of job descriptions, position classification, management of on-line postings, creation of recruitment ads, applicant review, interviews, compensation and offers.

Melissa Barney, MS, SHRM-CP holds a Master's degree in Organizational Development and Strategic HR from The Johns Hopkins University, a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Human Resources from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and is a SHRM - Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) certified by SHRM in June 2021. Melissa also attended North Allegheny High School.
