Rahul Bharadwaj, PhD

Research And Development Scientist at Lieber Institute for Brain Development

Dr. Rahul Bharadwaj began their career in 2000, when they completed their MS in Life Sciences at Sophia College, Mumbai University. Theirthesis focused on analyzing DNA from blood of Huntington's chorea patients and comparing the sequencing data against normal blood samples to characterize disease specific sequence polymorphisms. In 2004, they earned their MSc in Biotechnology/Biotechnology Management from Northeastern University.

In 2006, Dr. Bharadwaj began their PhD in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Lab of Schahram Akbarian, Director, Brudnick Institute. During their studies, they worked on two projects: one focused on discovery of novel chromatin structures and their impact on transcription regulation at the N-Methyl-D-Aspartate receptor 2B gene with direct clinical implications in schizophrenia and depression, and the other on identifying higher order chromatin structures at Glutamic Acid Decarboxylase (GAD1) gene in a cell differentiation model. Rahul also presented at the Society for Neuroscience International Conference and the Epigenomics, Sequencing and Snips Conference.

In 2013, Dr. Bharadwaj completed their PhD and began a Postdoctoral Associate position at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in the Molecular Neuropsychiatry field. The following year, they began a Neuropathology and Neuroanatomy Fellowship at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. In 2015, they joined the Lieber Institute for Brain Development as a Section Head in Brain Pathology, Staff Scientist II in Proteomics, and Staff Scientist in Genetic Neuropathology. During their time there, they conducted 1000 postmortem human brain gross anatomy and pathological assessments, was a Co-Investigator on PTSD R01 and SCHIZOPHRENIA R21 projects, and was the Lead Research Scientist on ALZHEIMER'S/AGING PHARMACEUTICAL PROJECTS and PTSD/ TBI VETERANS AFFAIRS CONTRACTS. Rahul also authored 14 scientific publications, six of which were lead authorships.

Rahul Bharadwaj obtained their PhD in Biomedical Sciences, General from the University of Massachusetts Medical School between 2006 and 2012. Rahul also obtained an MS in Biotechnology, Business of Biotechnology from Northeastern University between 2004 and 2006. Prior to that, they obtained an MS in Life Sciences (Neurobiology) from Sophia College, Mumbai University between 2000 and 2003, and a Bachelors in Microbiology, Biotechnology from Ramnarain Ruia College, Mumbai University between 1997 and 2000. Rahul also holds a Neuropathology Research Fellowship from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and has conducted Postdoctoral Research in Schizophrenia - Molecular Epigenetics and Neural circuitry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
