Dr. Valerie Daggett joined the University of Washington as an assistant professor 30 years ago. She is currently the David and Nancy Auth Endowed Professor in the Department of Bioengineering in the School of Medicine and College of Engineering. Daggett is also the Founder and CEO of AltPep, a spinout from her lab at UW.
Daggett is known for her work developing methods for realistic simulations of proteins and applying those methods to protein unfolding/folding, ramifications of single-nucleotide polymorphisms, and structural changes associated with misfolding associated with amyloid diseases. In the latter case, she discovered a new protein structure and shifted to experimental studies to characterize and target the structure, which led to AltPep.
She has been nationally recognized for her research and is a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical & Biological Engineering and a Fellow of the Biophysical Society. She has published over 275 scientific papers and holds several patents. Prior to joining the UW, Daggett was a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University and she obtained her PhD from the University of California, San Francisco.
