Samuel Smith

Chief Medical Officer, Northwest Hospital at LifeBridge Health

Samuel Smith is currently the Chief Medical Officer at Northwest Hospital at LifeBridge Health. Prior to this, they served as the Chief Quality Officer at Northwest Hospital from September 2017 to December 2019. In this role, they were responsible for identifying and implementing initiatives aimed at improving patient care quality, leading continuous improvement programs throughout the organization, and collaborating with other executives to engage with leaders and clinicians throughout the organization in a hands-on fashion to build quality, efficiency, effectiveness and a sense of shared accountability.

Before joining Northwest Hospital, Dr. Smith served as the Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Director of the Women's and Children's Service Line at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center from January 2003 to June 2017. In this role, they took a clinical leadership role in evaluating care delivery and developing the infrastructure for improvement. Samuel also strengthened the data and information capabilities of the organization and championed a data-driven environment.

Dr. Smith has also served on the Board of Directors and as Council Chair for the ACOG Council for Patient Safety in Women's Health Care. Samuel is a highly respected leader in the field of healthcare with a passion for quality patient care.

Dr. Samuel Smith attended Hebbville Elementary School as a child. Samuel then went on to The George Washington University, where they received their Bachelor of Science degree in biology. From there, they attended medical school at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where they earned their MD. Samuel completed their residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Georgetown University School of Medicine before completing a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology-infertility at Harvard Medical School.

Samuel Smith reports to Craig J. Carmichael, President, Northwest Hospital & SVP, LifeBridge Health. They are on a team with Kim Bushnell - VP, Patient Care Services & Chief Nursing Officer, Northwest Hospital, Dawn Hurley - AVP, Behavioral Health; Sinai, Northwest, Levindale and Grace Medical Center, and Nitza Santiago - AVP, Quality; Sinai, Northwest and Levindale.
