Myrtle Lighton has had a diverse work experience in the field of substance abuse treatment and outreach. Myrtle began their career in 1988 as an Associate Director at the Urban Minority Alcohol and Drug Abuse Outreach of Lucas County, where they worked until 2000. From 2000 to 2001, they served as a Chemical Dependency Counselor at the Criminal Justice Treatment Facility "CTF-Lucas County". In 2002, Myrtle became the Chief Executive Officer at Lima UMADAOP, a position they still hold.

Myrtle Lighton obtained a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Organizational Development from Spring Arbor University in the years 2013-2015. Myrtle also earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Family Life Studies from the same university during the years 1998-2000.
