Emotional Intelligence - isn't it just about being nice and understanding emotions? No - it's so much more than that! According to Daniel Goleman EQ encompasses five main components: Self-awareness – Recognizing one's own emotions and their effects. People with high self-awareness are aware of their moods and their impact on other people. They have a realistic assessment of their abilities and a well-grounded sense of self-confidence. Self-regulation – Managing one's emotions constructively. This trait involves handling feelings so they are appropriate; being honest, integrity, and adaptable; and being able to say no to impulsive urges. Motivation – Relishing achievement for its own sake. People with a high degree of emotional intelligence are usually motivated by things beyond external rewards like fame, money, recognition, and acclaim. Instead, they have a passion to fulfill their own inner needs and goals. Empathy – Considering other people's feelings especially when making decisions. Goleman defines empathy as the ability to understand the emotional makeup of other people. A skill in treating people according to their emotional reactions. Social skills – Managing relationships to move people in desired directions, whether leading or negotiating. Socially skilled individuals are adept at managing teams, building networks, and nurturing relationships. Goleman argues that EQ is as important as intellectual ability (IQ) in determining individual success in personal and professional life.
