Literacy KC
Melinda Brown-Mason is an experienced educator specializing in English language instruction with a focus on adult English Language Learners (ELL). Currently serving as an ELL Instructor at Literacy KC and a Missouri Adult Education Professional Development Facilitator at the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Melinda conducts workshops to enhance the teaching skills of ELL instructors statewide. Previous roles include Adult ELL Instructor at North Kansas City Schools, where Melinda developed and taught differentiated lesson plans, mentored new teachers, and organized professional development. Additional experience includes teaching at Park University and LCI at Park University, focusing on academic writing and intensive ESL. Melinda holds a Master's Degree in Teaching English as a Second Language and multiple Bachelor's Degrees in Business Administration, Spanish, and International Studies from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Founded in 1985, Literacy KC is a non-profit organization that offers adults a welcoming community to improve their literacy skills, enhancing quality of life for them and their families. With support from volunteers, donors, partners, and the community at large, Literacy KC invests in Kansas City’s greatest asset – our people. Each term, tutors, volunteers, and instructors build a collaborative learning environment where adult students expand their reading, writing, math, and digital skills. With each term, a new group of students inspires a legacy of education that results in a more positive and productive community.
