Carey Harris has held various leadership positions throughout their career. Carey started as Director of Organizing at Mon Valley Initiative in 1992, where they managed a team and developed regional strategies. In 1997, they became the Executive Director of the South Side Local Development Company, where they significantly increased the organization's budget, secured major investments, and expanded programming. In 2003, Harris joined A+ Schools as Executive Director, focusing on educational equity and community engagement. Carey then served as Executive Director of the PA Early Learning Investment Commission from 2016 to 2018, where they recruited leaders and advocated for public investment in early childhood initiatives. Currently, Harris is the Chief Executive Officer of Literacy Pittsburgh, where they continue to lead and make a difference.
Carey Harris obtained a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Psychology from Temple University in the years 1987 to 1991. Following this, Carey pursued further education at the University of Pittsburgh from 1991 to 1995, earning a Master of Public and International Affairs degree with a focus on Public and International Affairs as well as Social Work. During the same time period, Carey also obtained a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Pittsburgh, with a concentration in Community Organization and Advocacy. Additionally, in May 1998, Carey obtained a certification as a Certified Economic Development Professional from the National Development Council.
