Joel Thomson has worked in the marketing and communications industry since 2000. In 2006, they joined Publicis Australia as an Executive Creative Director-Digital, where they were responsible for digital creative and production teams in Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland, and clients in Australasia, America, the UK, and Europe. Joel also served as Creative Director-Digital at Publicis and was responsible for strategic and creative services for client brands and the Mojo Digital brand itself. In 2010, they co-founded Story Communications, 'Story', where they served as Founder, Creative and Content Director, responsible for communication strategy and creative delivery. Joel'sclients included Mondelez, Tourism Victoria and REA Group. In 2012, they became co-founder and board member of the technology startup business LivePreso, where they served as Content and Communications Director and Chief Storyteller. In 2017, they served as an official Judge of the AMY Awards, run by AIMIA. In 2020, they served as an Awards Judge for the SIIA CODiE Awards. In 2021, they joined Green Hat as Strategy Director, Australia's largest B2B marketing and communications agency. Joel also joined BBN - The World's B2B Agency as Agency Partner - Strategy Director, representing BBN International in Australia and New Zealand. Additionally, they are a Professional Member of the Australian Marketing Institute.

Joel Thomson attended Falmouth University from 1992 to 1995, where they received a Bachelor of Arts in Digital Communication and Media/Multimedia. In 1995, they also obtained an ISTD graduate membership from the International Society of Typographic Designers. Joel then went on to pursue a Foundation degree (Aus equivalent: Foundation pathway course into degree) in Communication Design at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College. Prior to this, Joel Thomson had completed a GCE A levels (Aus equivalent: SSCE Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination) at Cotham Grammar School and a NCEA Level 1 at Wellington College of Education.
