Sarah Amundrud, PhD

Senior Data Scientist at Local Logic

Sarah Amundrud, PhD has a diverse background in data science and research. Sarah is currently working as a Senior Data Scientist at Local Logic since November 2022. Prior to this, they worked at riskthinking.AI from October 2020 until November 2022, first as a Climate Data Scientist and then as a Lead Data Scientist in the Climate Division.

Before joining riskthinking.AI, Sarah worked as a Research Consultant for the BC Ministry of Agriculture & BC Fruit Growers Association from May 2019 to November 2022. In this role, they provided valuable insights by building degree day models and combining survey data with climate data to predict the spread of an invasive insect pest. Sarah also organized and manipulated multi-year data sets using R and tidyverse.

Sarah's academic expertise includes a PhD in Quantitative Ecology from The University of British Columbia, where they focused on uncovering the drivers of arthropod distributions across different spatial scales and systems. Sarah utilized various statistical tools, such as Deming regressions and mixed-effects models, and conducted data analysis in R.

In addition to their research experience, Sarah also worked as a Data Science Fellow at Insight Data Science from May 2020 to July 2020. During their time there, they developed a logistic regression-based applicant scoring algorithm in Python, which significantly reduced the manual application processing load for the Insight Fellowship Program. Sarah also extracted meaningful insights by engineering features and conducting targeted keyword extraction and text processing.

Overall, Sarah Amundrud, PhD has extensive experience in data science, climate modeling, research consulting, and academic research. Sarah has a strong background in statistical analysis, programming languages such as R and Python, and applying data-driven insights to solve complex problems.

Sarah Amundrud, PhD has an extensive education background in the field of Ecology. Sarah began their academic journey at Langara College, where they earned an Associate of Arts and Sciences (AAS) degree in Biology, General from 2008 to 2010. Sarah then continued their studies at The University of British Columbia, where they completed their Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Ecology and Environmental Biology from 2010 to 2012.

Driven by their passion for research and understanding ecological processes, Sarah pursued a Master of Science (MS) degree in Ecology at The University of British Columbia from 2012 to 2014. Building upon their expertise, they then proceeded to obtain a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Ecology from the same institution, enriching their knowledge from 2014 to 2020.

In addition to their academic degrees, Sarah has also earned various certifications to enhance their professional skills. In 2020, they obtained the edX Verified Certificate for Decision Making Under Uncertainty: Introduction to Structured Expert Judgment, which showcases their expertise in making informed decisions in uncertain situations. That same year, they also completed a Web Scraping and API Fundamentals in Python course and earned a Python Bootcamp certification from Udemy, further solidifying their programming skills.

Sarah's commitment to continuous learning and staying at the forefront of their field led their to complete the Sustainability and Climate Risk (SCR) Certificate offered by the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP) in 2022. With this certificate, they demonstrate their understanding of sustainable practices and the assessment of climate risks.

Sarah Amundrud, PhD's extensive education background and additional certifications make their a highly qualified professional in the field of Ecology, with a strong foundation in research, data analysis, and decision-making.
