Philip Smith

Philip Smith is a highly experienced engineering professional with a strong background in systems design and research and development, currently serving as Senior Director at Luminar Technologies since January 2018. Smith has been pivotal in the development of high-performance lidar technology for advanced driver-assistance systems. Prior to Luminar, extensive experience at L3Harris Technologies included leadership roles as Chief Systems Engineer, where Smith drove the design and production of revolutionary airborne lidar sensors. Academic contributions include a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Virginia and instructional roles at the University of Tennessee, complemented by an MBA from Carnegie Mellon University. Smith's work has been recognized through awards and numerous academic publications, establishing expertise in both technical development and business strategy in the lidar and engineering fields.
