Bala Chandran is CEO & Co-Founder at Lumo. Prior to their current position, Chandran was a consultant at Analytics Operations Engineering, Inc from May 2007 to February 2014. In this role, they worked on data mining, process improvement, marketing, network optimization, and software development projects across various industries including business process outsourcing, transportation, retail, and financial services. Chandran was also a summer analyst at the company in 2006, where they helped develop and test an aircraft and crew schedule optimization tool at a fractional jet ownership company. Prior to their work at Analytics Operations Engineering, Inc., Chandran was a student assistant at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory from September 2006 to April 2007. In this role, they implemented a module in the Department of Energy’s Stochastic Energy Deployment System (SEDS) to forecast long-term energy demand in the United States using Monte Carlo simulation. Chandran has also interned at Intelsat Global Service Corporation as a Network Optimization Intern in 2005 and at Sun Microsystems Laboratories (Sun Labs) as a Summer Intern in 2004.
After completing a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research from the University of California, Berkeley, Bala Chandran pursued a career in academia. Bala taught at the University of Maryland - Robert H. Smith School of Business, where they were also the Director of the Center for Quality and Productivity Improvement. Bala then returned to their alma mater, the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, where they are currently a Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering.
