Paulo Fontes, MD, FACS has a diverse work experience in the medical field. Paulo began their career as a fellow at UPMC in 1992 and later joined STI, UPMC in 2001, where they served as the Director of the Liver Transplant Program and later as the Medical Director of the Organ Referral Center until 2011. In 2014, Fontes became the Deputy Director at the McGowan Institute of Regenerative Medicine and also took on the role of Senior Medical Advisor at Virtech Bio Inc. In 2017, they joined LyGenesis as the Chief Medical Officer and also became a Professor of Surgery and the Director of the Machine Perfusion Program at UPMC WorkPartners. In 2018, Fontes joined WVU Medicine as a Professor of Surgery.

Paulo Fontes, MD, FACS has a diverse education history. In 1980, they obtained their Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from Sao Paulo State University (UNESP). Paulo then completed a residency in General Surgery at Hospital Professor Edmundo Vasconcelos in Sao Paulo, Brazil from 1986 to 1989. Following this, they pursued a research fellowship in Operative Technique & Experimental Surgery at Sao Paulo Federal University (UNIFESP) from 1989 to 1991. During 1991 to 1993, they were a Fellow in Cell Transplantation & Transplant Immunology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Continuing their education, Dr. Fontes completed a Multi-Organ Transplant Fellowship, which was accredited by the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, at the Starzl Transplant Institute within the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center from 1996 to 1998.

In 2008, they enrolled in a program called UPMC-PSD/Katz Physician Leadership, offered by the University of Pittsburgh Katz Graduate School of Business. In 2010, they also participated in the Leadership Development Program at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management.

Dr. Fontes furthered their business education in 2012 by attending the University of Pittsburgh Katz Graduate School of Business. There, they focused on Academic Entrepreneurship: The Business of Innovation & Commercialization.

In their recent endeavors, Dr. Fontes has engaged in data science and personalized medicine by studying at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine's Department of Biomedical Informatics, Center for Causal Discovery, and Institute for Personalized Medicine from 2016 onward.
