Barbara Spivak, M.D.

Barbara Spivak, M.D. has an extensive work experience in the medical field. Barbara started their career at Tufts University School of Medicine in 1979, where they worked as an Instructor in Medicine until 1984. From there, they held various roles in different medical institutions, including Boston Medical Center, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Steward Health Care, and DotHouse Health. Barbara also served as an Instructor in Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine and Harvard University. In 1986, Dr. Spivak joined Mount Auburn Medical Associates as an Internist, and they later became the Managing Partner until 1995. Additionally, they worked as a Staff Physician at Mount Auburn Hospital and held the position of President and Chairman of the Board at Mount Auburn Cambridge, IPA, which is a physician membership organization.

Barbara Spivak, M.D. holds a Board Certification in Internal Medicine, which was obtained in 1979. Prior to that, they completed an Internal Medicine Residency Program at St. Elizabeth's Hospital from 1976 to 1977. Barbara pursued their medical education at Tufts University School of Medicine and graduated between 1972 and 1976. Barbara earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Sociology from Tufts University, where they attended from 1968 to 1972.

Mount Auburn Cambridge Independent Practice Association, Inc. (MACIPA)

MACIPA is a physician membership organization, established in 1985. Almost 500 primary care physicians and specialists who have privileges at Mount Auburn Hospital are members of MACIPA. Practice locations include Cambridge, Belmont, Watertown, Waltham, Somerville, Lexington, Arlington, Allston/Brighton. Newton, and Medford . MACIPA PCPs have approximately 250,000 patients enrolled in their practices. MACIPA’s accomplishments in controlling healthcare costs and improving quality are well known. MACIPA was chosen as one of the original participants in CMS’ Medicare Pioneer Contract and today participates in the Medicare Shared Savings’ Program. MACIPA was also selected as the first physician organization to participate in the Alternative Quality Contract. In conjunction with our physicians, MACIPA develops and manages programs in quality improvement, care management, population management, patient experience, health information exchange, and pharmacy. These initiatives lead to better health outcomes, reduction in hospital admissions, and better management of health care spending.
