Melissa Kim has a diverse and extensive work experience in the fields of communications, writing, and editing. Melissa is currently the Director of Communications & Marketing at Maine Audubon since August 2019. Prior to this, Melissa worked as a Freelance Writer and Editor since 1995. Melissa had roles at Islandport Press from 2009 to 2019, serving as the Editorial Director from April 2017 to July 2019, and as the Senior Editor for Children's and Young Adult books. Melissa also worked as a Freelance Columnist at The Portland Press Herald between 2004 and 2009. From 1999 to 2004, they were an Online Content Producer at MaineToday Media, responsible for content development, web production, and community outreach. Melissa's earlier experiences include working as a Science Exhibit Developer at the Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine from 1997 to 1999, and as a Columnist, Writer, and News Assistant at The Portland Press Herald from 1993 to 1996. Melissa began their career as an Editor at Mary Glasgow Magazines from 1988 to 1994, and as an Associate Editor at Scholastic from 1985 to 1987, where they focused on editing national weekly newsmagazines for schoolchildren.

Melissa Kim pursued their Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Studies at Brown University from 1979 to 1983. Melissa furthered their education by completing a Master's Degree in Journalism, specializing in the Science and Environmental Reporting Program at New York University from 1983 to 1985.
