Ray Howard

Ray Howard has over 30 years of experience in the insurance industry, specializing in engineering and loss control. Ray currently serves as the Director of Technical Engineering & Risk Solutions Training at Markel.

Howard began their career in insurance at St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Company in 1987, where they served as the Loss Control Industry Manager for the Risk Management Services Division. Ray then spent eight years at Reliance National Co as the Unit Loss Control Manager. In 2000, they joined CNA Insurance as the AVP of Engineering and Loss Control for the Commercial Insurance and E&S Departments. Howard left CNA in 2001 to join Zurich Services Corporation, where they spent the next five years as a Senior Engineering Consultant and Team Leader.

Howard joined Markel in 2006 and has served in various roles over the past 13 years. Ray was promoted to their current position as Director of Technical Engineering & Risk Solutions Training in 2019. In this role, they are responsible for developing and delivering technical training programs for Markel’s engineering and risk management professionals.

Ray Howard has a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Lewis University and a Bachelor's Science from Park University.

Ray Howard reports to Thomas S. Gayner, Co-CEO. Ray Howard works with Kim E. Coonrod - Director, Administration & Operations, Robert Cox - President, Insurance Operations, and Linda Schreiner - SVP, Strategic Management.
