Before their roles in the news industry, Korfhage worked at Allston Trading from May 2003 to January 2008 as a Senior Developer. During their time there, they co-wrote one of the company's important trades and created a group responsible for software libraries underlying their trading systems.
In the earlier years of their career, they worked at Merrill Lynch as a Director from April 1999 to December 2002, and at D. E. Shaw (FarSight Financial Services) as a Team Lead from June 1996 to April 1999.
Korfhage's career began in academia, where they served as an Assistant Professor at Polytechnic University from August 1989 to June 1996. Their responsibilities included running a research group and teaching various computer science courses. Willard also worked with another faculty member to secure computer resources from Sun for the students' computer lab.
Willard Korfhage completed their Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (BSE) at Princeton University from 1978 to 1982. Willard then pursued their Master of Science (MS) in Computer Science at UCLA from 1982 to 1985. Finally, they obtained their Ph.D. in Computer Science from UCLA, completing their doctoral studies from 1985 to 1989.
