Dr. Jonas Fontenot has a strong background in the field of cancer treatment and medical physics. Jonas joined the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center in 2008 and has held various roles, including President and CEO since 2023, Chief Operating Officer from 2017 to 2023, and as the Dr. Charles M. Smith Chief of Physics from 2015 to 2023. In their role as Chief of Physics, they provided leadership to a clinical physics and dosimetry group, oversaw a partnership with Louisiana State University, and published numerous articles and received research funding. Jonas also served as an Academic Medical Physicist at the Cancer Center from 2008 to 2015, contributing to the radiation oncology program and participating in research and teaching activities. Prior to joining the Cancer Center, Dr. Fontenot worked as a Graduate Research Assistant at MD Anderson Cancer Center from 2002 to 2008. Jonas is also an Adjunct Faculty member at Louisiana State University.
Jonas Fontenot, PhD, obtained their Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 2002. Jonas then pursued further education at the UT MD Anderson Cancer Center UTHealth Houston Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, earning a Master of Science degree in Medical Physics from 2002 to 2005. Continuing at the same institution, Jonas completed their Ph.D. in Medical Physics from 2005 to 2008.
In 2011, Jonas attained the certification of Board Certified Therapeutic Medical Physics from the American Board of Radiology.
Later, Jonas pursued a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree at Louisiana State University from 2018 to 2020. In the same year, they also completed a Health Policy Fellowship at the American Society for Radiation Oncology from 2018 to 2019.
