William Elwell

William (Bill) Elwell is an accomplished legal professional with extensive experience in corporate tax law. Currently serving as the Head of Corporate Tax Law at MassMutual since January 2018, Elwell provides legal advice on tax issues related to investment transactions, mergers and acquisitions, as well as international tax matters. Prior to this role, Elwell held positions at The Hartford as Senior Tax Counsel/Assistant Vice President, and at the U.S. Department of Justice as Trial Attorney in the Civil Tax Division, where responsibilities included litigation in federal and state courts. Elwell's background also includes significant contributions as Senior Counsel at ACLI, focusing on tax issues in the life insurance sector, and as Senior Associate at Miller & Chevalier Chartered, where Elwell was involved in high-stakes tax controversies and IRS audits. Elwell holds a Juris Doctor, cum laude, from Georgetown University Law Center and a BA in Philosophy with a Minor in Business Finance from Brigham Young University.
