MAYA

MAYA Organization is a Pittsburgh-based 501(c)3 with a mission to empower BIPOC and marginalized birthing people and birthworkers, and to create positive change in the systems that impact them. Our doulas, mentors, and counselors are trained to deliver equitable, comprehensive care to the majority Black and Spanish-speaking clients we serve. MAYA operates two programming streams: perinatal support services for underserved birthing people and counseling for incarcerated people. We are also involved in several initiatives working for birth equity. As our programs have evolved in response to community need and the increased visibility of issues related to equity, we have embarked on a strategic planning process. Our evolving strategic plan is designed to guide programming and operations in accordance with our mission, and to build our capacity to support high quality, justice-centered programming. MAYA’s services are free and open to all, and our English-language services center the needs of Black women. Our Spanish-language programming primarily serves immigrant populations, and responds to the needs of a community delivering their babies in an unfamiliar medical system. We follow proven models for improving birth equity, support birthing people in making their voices heard, and champion clients as experts in their own lives.
