Derrick Ramos is the current Assistant County Manager and Chief of Staff at Mecklenburg County. Prior to their current position, Ramos served as the Director of Legislative Affairs and Senior Advisor for the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy from January 2013 to December 2016. In this role, they led a six person federal office to develop legislative goals, strategies, and messaging to advance the department's public policy, regulatory, and appropriations priorities with the U.S. Congress. Ramos was responsible for conducting detailed analysis of legislation and its alignment with agency priorities, driving policy consensus, spearheading strategies to influence legislation, and coordinating with cross-functional senior executives to develop government relations strategies. Derrick also secured $2 billion in annual federal appropriations and mitigated the impact of congressional directives.

During their time at the U.S. Department of Energy, Ramos developed and maintained bipartisan relationships with members of Congress and staff in the House of Representatives and Senate and created opportunities for senior executives to educate elected officials and stakeholders on the department's mission and priorities. Derrick also prepared senior executives for congressional hearings, meetings, and in-district visits with members of Congress by developing high quality testimony, talking points, or briefing materials.
