Stuart M. Levine, MD, FACP, is president of MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center and senior vice president for MedStar Health. In this role, he oversees the overall operational and strategic direction for one of the largest community teaching hospitals in Maryland.
For nearly a decade, Dr. Levine has risen in leadership and responsibilities within MedStar Health. Most recently, he served as president and chief medical officer of MedStar Harbor Hospital and senior vice president for MedStar Health. Under his leadership, MedStar Harbor expanded its Behavioral Health Services, launched an intensive outpatient program and crisis intervention services, and provided executive leadership for the system Behavioral Health service line. Preceding this role, he was the vice president of Medical Affairs for MedStar Harbor, which in two years expanded to include oversight for Medical Affairs at MedStar Franklin Square. When Dr. Levine first joined MedStar Health, he worked as a board-certified rheumatologist at MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital, and vice chairman of Strategic Growth and Research in the Department of Medicine at MedStar Good Samaritan and MedStar Union Memorial hospitals.
Dr. Levine was in the initial cohort of the MedStar Leader of the Future: Physician Leadership Development Program and served as the physician lead for the implementation of the MedStar Interdisciplinary Model of Care (IMOC). He has served as co-chair of the MedStar Potentially Avoidable Readmissions/Utilization Committee.
Prior to MedStar Health, Dr. Levine served as a faculty member and assistant professor of medicine in Rheumatology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he also served as co-director of the Johns Hopkins Vasculitis Center.
Dr. Levine has a medical degree from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed an internship and residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital, with a fellowship in rheumatology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of the American College of Rheumatology, American Medical Association, American Association for Physician Leadership, and the American College of Healthcare Executives. Currently, Dr. Levine is a member of the Board of Directors for Health Care for the Homeless, the Greater Chesapeake Gateway Chamber of Commerce, and The Associated.
Throughout his career, he has been published in a number of peer-reviewed journals, including PLOS One, Arthritis & Rheumatism, Journal of Rheumatology, Seminars in Arthritis and Rheumatism, and the American Journal of Medicine.
