Patrick Van Wie

Director, Integration & Hardware at Merlin Labs

Patrick Van Wie has a wealth of experience in the aviation industry, beginning with their role as an Avionics Technician in the United States Air Force from 1992 to 1996. Afterwards, they joined Scantron Service Group, where they served as a Field Service Engineer and Depot Technician in the Printer Department from 1996 to 1999. Patrick then moved to Honeywell Aerospace, where they worked as a Systems Engineer in the Communications Division from 1999 to 2000.

In 2000, Patrick Van Wie joined Atmel as a Yield Enhancement Engineer and Engineering Technician, where they monitored, analyzed, and improved silicon wafer fabrication processes to increase die yield output. From 2006 to 2007, they worked at Aviation Technology Group as an Avionics Systems Engineer, where they developed, integrated, and certified avionic systems in accordance with FAA 14 CFR Part 23 and EASA regulations.

From 2007 to 2013, they were employed at AirDat LLC as a Project Engineer, Project & Certification Manager, and Director of Certification & Production. In this role, they were responsible for project management of Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) certification programs and projects, interfacing with FAA ACO and MIDO offices, and creating and improving manufacturing processes in accordance with FAA 14 CFR Part 21 regulations.

From 2018 to 2021, Patrick Van Wie worked at SmartSky Networks, LLC as the Director of Aircraft Certification & Product Assurance. In this role, they were responsible for creating and reviewing aircraft certification related requirements, Statements of Work, RFP documentation and responses, and managing aircraft certification projects in coordination with SmartSky Partners. Currently, they are the Director of Integration & Hardware at Merlin Labs.

Patrick Van Wie has a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Electrical Engineering from Colorado Technical University, which they obtained between 2002 and 2006. Patrick also has an Associate of Science (A.S.) in Electronics Technology from Colorado Technical University, which they obtained between 2002 and 2004. Additionally, they have an Associate of Science (A.S.) in Avionics Systems Technology from the Community College of the Air Force. Van Wie has also completed a 14 CFR Part 21 Course with the Federal Aviation Administration and FAA Designated Engineering Representative Indoctrination Training with the Federal Aviation Administration.
