Ian Erkelens is an experienced professional in vision science and optometry. From July 2009 to August 2014, Ian worked as an Optometrist at IRIS The Visual Group. Subsequently, Ian served at the University of Waterloo from August 2014 to September 2018 as a Clinical Instructor, Intern Supervisor, and Postdoctoral Research Fellow, where Ian developed innovative research methodologies to study eye movement control in the human brain. Ian transitioned to Oculus VR as a Postdoctoral Researcher from August 2018 to March 2020, focusing on the impacts of visual conflicts in augmented and virtual reality systems. Currently, since April 2020, Ian holds dual roles as a Research Scientist and Research Manager at Meta, leading teams in developing metrics for visual comfort in display systems and managing a group of vision scientists and engineers to enhance user experience in visual technologies. Prior to these roles, Ian was a Helitack Wildland Firefighter in Alberta from April 2004 to September 2009. Ian completed education at the University of Waterloo between 2014 and 2018.
