George Magklaras

George Magklaras has extensive work experience in the field of IT, particularly in roles related to HPC systems, IT management, and data networking. George is currently working as a Senior Engineer in HPC systems at the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, a position they have held since April 2021. Prior to this, they worked at Steelcyber Scientific, where they served as the Chief Technology Officer from October 2011 to December 2020 and also as a Member of the Supervisory Board since January 2021.

Before joining Steelcyber Scientific, George Magklaras held the position of IT Manager/Head of IT at The Biotechnology Center of Oslo, University of Oslo for nearly 19 years, from September 2002 to April 2021. During their tenure, they were responsible for the design and operation of the IT infrastructure for the Biotek and NCMM Centre.

George also served in leadership roles at EMBnet, including Secretary from 2005 to 2010 and Chairman from 2010 to 2017 of the Technical Management Project Committee. From June 2015 onwards, they were a member of the Operational Board, overseeing the IT operations of the Extended Molecular Bioinformatics Network.

Additionally, George Magklaras worked as a Senior Engineer in the Group for Research Infrastructure - High-Performance Computing (USIT) at the University of Oslo from August 2012 to December 2015. Their responsibilities included scientific and HPC systems administration and development on the Abel supercomputer.

Earlier in their career, George Magklaras held positions such as Data Network Consultant at Video Networks Ltd, London UK from December 2001 to August 2002, and Research Assistant/Part-time Lecturer at the University of Plymouth, UK from August 2000 to November 2001. George also worked as a Systems Administrator/Data Security Consultant at SheerSite Plc., Plymouth (U.K.) on a part-time basis from July 2000 to July 2001.

George Magklaras began their career with an industrial placement position at IBM from July 1998 to September 1999, where they provided technical support for IBM enterprise customers, focusing on DYNIX OS, data networking, and TCP/IP protocol.

Overall, George Magklaras has a wealth of experience in IT management, HPC systems, data networking, and IT infrastructure design and operation.

George Magklaras completed their education with a PhD in Information Security, Intrusion Detection, and Computer Science from the University of Plymouth, which they pursued from 2005 to 2011. Prior to that, they obtained an MPhil in Intrusion Detection from the same university between 2002 and 2004. George also obtained a BSc (Hons) in Computer Systems and Networks from the University of Plymouth from 1996 to 2000. In addition to their formal education, they earned certification as a Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) from RedHat in November 2008.
