Policy & Government Relations Officer (formerly CCO And Interim Cao) at Metro Parks Tacoma

Hunter George has a diverse work experience that spans various sectors. Hunter started their career in 1990 as a Supervisory Correspondent/Statehouse Reporter at The Associated Press, where they supervised the AP bureau in Olympia, Washington. In 2001, they joined The News Tribune, initially as an Assistant Managing Editor/Team Leader before transitioning to the role of Director of Communications at Pierce County, Washington, in 2009. In this role, they managed external and internal communications for the county. In 2012, they became a Councilmember for the City of Fircrest and served as Mayor from 2018 to 2021. During their time as Mayor, they also served as the Chair of South Sound Housing Affordability Partners, a coalition dedicated to creating and preserving affordable housing in Pierce County. In 2015, they moved on to become the Policy & Government Relations Officer at Metro Parks Tacoma, where they were responsible for government relations and special projects. Additionally, they served as the Vice Chair of the Pierce County Lodging Tax Advisory Committee, collaborating with the Tourism Promotion Area to invest lodging tax revenue in the local tourism industry.

Hunter George holds a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in History with a minor in journalism from North Carolina State University. Additionally, they have obtained a Certificate of Completion in Project Management from the University of Washington Tacoma. They have also earned several certificates from the FEMA Emergency Management Institute, including IS-100c and 200c (Incident Command), and G2300 (Intermediate Emergency Operations Center functions).
