Charles Lister

Senior Fellow & Director, Counterterrorism at Middle East Institute

Charles Lister is a prominent expert in counterterrorism and Middle Eastern affairs, currently serving as a Senior Fellow and Director of Counterterrorism at the Middle East Institute since January 2016. In this role, Charles manages extensive research programs focused on Syria, terrorism, and countering extremist ideologies while coordinating a team of scholars and hosting various events. Previously, Charles held a Senior Consultant position at The Shaikh Group, where influential political processes involved extensive engagement with Syrian leadership and armed opposition groups. A Visiting Fellow at the Brookings Doha Center, Charles conducted significant research on the Syrian insurgency and produced notable publications, including a book on the Islamic State. Charles also served as Analyst and Head of MENA at IHS Jane's and was involved in high-level research on US foreign security policy early in the career. Education includes a First Class MA Honours in International Relations from the University of St Andrews.
