Jean-Claude Deguara

Jean-Claude is an award-winning VFX Supervisor and co-founder of independent visual effects studio Milk.

Since its launch in 2013, Milk has created a range of innovative and complex sequences for television and feature films, winning an Oscar for feature Film Ex-Machina; an Emmy for the BBC/Hartswood’s Sherlock (2016); three consecutive BAFTA Television Craft Awards for the BBC’s Doctor Who (2014 and 2015) and Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (2016) and eight BAFTA Craft nominations.

Jean-Claude was the VFX Supervisor for BBC/Amazon’s Good Omens, the acclaimed six-part TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s cult novel – which earnt Milk a 2020 BAFTA Television Craft Award nomination. He recently completed production as overall VFX Supervisor on Sky Original drama, eight-part sci-fi series Intergalactic, delivering 850 shots during lockdown.

As Milk’s VFX Supervisor on Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, Jean-Claude led the team to win a 2016 BAFTA Television Craft Award and VES Award and RTS Craft Award nominations. He also led the team that won a 2016 Creative Arts Emmy Award for Sherlock: ‘The Abominable Bride’.

Jean-Claude’s VFX Supervisor credits at Milk also include Hartswood Films/Netflix Dracula; three television series of Sherlock, ITV’s Beowulf: Return to the Shieldlands and David Attenborough’s Natural History Museum Alive 3D and Dinosaurs in The Wild – a special immersive UK theatrical event, which saw Milk create large-scale CG dinosaurs and environment and render 78 million 6k stereoscopic frames of complex animation in the Cloud in 10 weeks.

Milk’s credits span feature films Rebecca (Netflix), The Old Guard (Netflix), Annihilation, Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them (Warner Bros.), Kingsman: The Golden Circle (Lionsgate); Ben Wheatley’s Free Fire and High-Rise; Everest (Universal), The Martian (20th Century Fox), The Divergent Series: Insurgent, Poltergeist (Fox/MGM), Brett Ratner’s Hercules (Paramount/MGM), Universal’s Dracula Untold; and for television: Netflix’ Cursed, Channel 4/Amazon/Sony’s Electric Dreams; Altered Carbon (Skydance/Netflix); The Alienist (Paramount/TNT); Sky One’s 2016 Christmas Day feature The Last Dragonslayer, Class (BBC3), Beowulf: Return to the Shieldlands and Thunderbirds are Go (ITV) for television.

Prior to the launch of Milk in June 2013, Jean-Claude was Joint Head of 3D/Animation Supervisor and VFX Supervisor for Mill TV & Film for 10 years. His extensive feature film experience includes Alexander, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, Alien vs. Predator and 28 Weeks Later.

Jean-Claude’s television credits include BAFTA, RTS Craft and VES Award winning work on Doctor Who as well as Merlin, The Sarah Jane Adventures, Torchwood and ITV’s Primeval for which he was VFX Supervisor. His career began as a Runner at Soho 601 before moving to The Hive to become a Character Animator and later joining The Moving Picture Company.
