Kurucusu Ali Naci Karacan olan Milliyet gazetesinin ilk sayısı 3 Mayıs 1950 tarihinde yayımlandı. Gazetenin ilk yazarları arasında Refik Halid, Bedii Faik, İsmail Hami, Ulunay bulunuyordu. Abdi İpekçi 1954'te yazı işleri müdürü olunca Milliyet gazetesi Türkiye'nin en etkili siyasi gazetelerinden biri haline geldi. Peyami Safa, Reşat Ekrem, Çetin Altan gibi yazarlar da Milliyet'te yazmaya başladı.
