The current challenge is not only to keep up with machine intelligence, but also to hold our own intelligence to a higher standard, where decisions carry consequence, and where the burden of legitimacy cannot be abdicated.

This is where the distinction between building and choosing becomes critical. When machines build machines, humans still define goals, constraints, and purposes. Capability expands, but agency remains anchored. When machines choose machines to work with, selecting sources, models, and data pipelines without transparency, that anchor begins to loosen. The system decides not only how to act, but which other systems to rely on. In doing so, it determines the informational diet on which future decisions are made. The human role shifts from author to observer, from decision-maker to downstream consumer of machine-mediated choices.

The transition also marks a deeper cognitive shift. The old world was one of bounded rationality, where humans filtered information under constraints of time and attention. The new world is one of delegated rationality, where machines perform that filtering on our behalf. And this delegation is recursive. Machines filter information; that filtered output becomes the training data for future systems; and those systems, in turn, refine the filters. What emerges is not just automation, but a feedback loop that continuously reshapes the boundary of what is visible, credible, and actionable. In such a machine-mediated reality, AI systems become epistemic gatekeepers, defining what is “true enough” for use, even when their criteria remain opaque. The challenge is no longer access to information, but preserving human agency in deciding what counts as knowledge in the first place.
