John Noseworthy

John H. Noseworthy, MD, is president and chief executive officer emeritus of the Mayo Clinic. Under Noseworthy’s leadership from 2009 to 2018, the Mayo Clinic transformed from a holding company into a single organization with a unified strategy and business plan. Noseworthy and his team worked to ensure Mayo remained a trusted resource for the 1 million-plus patients who seek treatment there each year and to extend treatment to new populations.

Prior to his appointment as CEO, Noseworthy served as professor and chair of the Mayo Clinic’s Department of Neurology, medical director of the Department of Development, and editor-in-chief of the journal Neurology. A specialist in multiple sclerosis, he designed and conducted controlled clinical trials over two decades. His books include a three-volume textbook, “Neurological Therapeutics: Principles and Practice.”

He is a member of the Health Governors, World Economic Forum. Noseworthy is also an officer in the order of Orange-Nassau, a civil and military Dutch order of chivalry founded in 1892. In 2016 he was given the Research!America Geoffrey Beene Builders of Science Award.

Noseworthy holds a medical degree from Dalhousie University in Canada, where he began his neurology training. He completed a research fellowship in neurology through Harvard Medical School, where he was also named a Centennial Fellow in Pathology. He is a Fellow in Neurology with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
