Ryan Kidd

Ryan Kidd is an experienced professional in the field of AI safety, currently serving as Co-Director of the ML Alignment & Theory Scholars program since April 2022, which connects scholars with the Berkeley AI safety research community. In March 2023, Ryan co-founded the London Initiative for Safe AI to support AI alignment organizations in London. As a Regrantor for Manifund since March 2023, Ryan oversees the distribution of charitable funds to various projects. Previously, Ryan worked as a Research Scholar with the Stanford Existential Risks Initiative and as a Physics Tutor at The University of Queensland. Ryan holds a PhD in Physics from The University of Queensland, obtained in April 2022, and a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Physics from the same institution, earned in 2017.

MATS is an educational seminar and independent research program that aims to provide talented scholars with talks, workshops, and research mentorship in the field of AI safety, and connect them with the Berkeley AI safety research community. Past mentors include researchers from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, MIRI, ARC, CHAI, CAIS, Centre on Long-Term Risk, and more. MATS alumni have joined Anthropic, MIRI, ARC Evals, and CHAI, and founded several AI safety organisations, including Apollo Research, Leap Labs, and a new MIRI division.
