Nicolas worked as a Senior Research Fellow at the University of South Australia from July 2016 to June 2019, and again from July 2019 (ongoing). In this role, they focused on R&D of optofluidic sensors and optical data storage platforms, as well as developing grants for joint industry/academic projects and collaborating with industry and government agencies.
Prior to that, Nicolas was a Co-Founder & Chief Science Officer at Modular Photonics starting from May 2015, where they were responsible for sales, marketing, and website development. Nicolas played a crucial role in providing solutions for increasing the capacity of legacy multimode fiber networks.
Previously, they worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Adelaide from February 2014 to June 2016. In this role, they engaged in multiple photonics projects and mentored PhD students. Nicolas was also a part of a prestigious ARC Laureate Fellowship team leading several projects.
Nicolas Riesen began their education in 2006 at The Australian National University, where they pursued a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Physics. Simultaneously, they also worked towards a Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) degree in Physics. This dual program lasted from 2006 to 2010. After completing their undergraduate studies, Nicolas continued their academic journey at the same institution, joining the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in Physics in 2011.
