Nancy Baker Cahill

Art + Tech Grant Recipient at MUSEUM ASSOCIATES

Nancy Baker Cahill is an interdisciplinary artist with a focus on systemic power, consciousness, and the human body. Nancy has been the recipient of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) Art + Tech Grant in 2022, where they will create a systems project called 'Substrate' exploring the equitable distributive properties of mycelium networks.

In 2018, Nancy founded and became the director and artist of the 4th Wall app, an augmented reality (AR) public art platform that challenges traditional conventions of public art and promotes inclusive creative expression. The app has expanded to include geolocated AR land art, curated AR exhibitions, and collaborative projects with artists worldwide.

Since 2008, Nancy has run their own studio, where they create research-based immersive experiences, video installations, and conceptual blockchain projects rooted in the history of drawing. Their augmented reality artworks extend and subvert the lineage of land art, often addressing the climate crisis, civics, and a desire for more equitable futures.

In 2019, they became an Artist Fellow at the Berggruen Institute, participating in the Transformations of the Human fellowship, which explores the challenges of artificial intelligence and biotechnology to our understanding of what it means to be human.

Nancy has also been involved with the Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, serving as the Board Chair from 2019 to 2020, Vice Chairman of the Board from 2016 to 2019, and the Chair of the Board of Directors in 2016.

Nancy Baker Cahill attended Williams College from 1989 to 1992, where they obtained a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Art. Additionally, they pursued studies in Political Theory during their time at the same institution.
